Someone disagreed with my stance on the Ford Raptor badging – which is totally understandable. It's got a lot of history behind it, it's just not my taste. I've been recommending a lot of people making good points that go against my stance. One person actually made a passionate, well-reasoned argument, that I would have recommended otherwise, but instead they decided to open it up with a bigoted comment.

So instead of getting recommended, they got banned.

We should at least get an updated list of which groups are off limits, otherwise I won't know when to be offended. I'm usually pretty good when HR makes us play "guess whether X is a protected class" (yes really), but it's hard to keep up with all the pet groups these days...

Absolutely. That, and What Do People Do All Day? And try to find an unabridged edition. Scarry's books have been reprinted so many times and so many different versions that it's hard to find his original versions. And be sure to look for Goldbug!

Does it honestly feel like a good thing that instead of considering a "passionate, well-reasoned argument" and dismissing or addressing its drawbacks, we shut down the discussion and user for what presumably saying something mean?

Nothing about putting certain groups beyond criticism, instead of fighting bad ideas with good ones and all that, rubs you the wrong way as a journalist?

It would be extremely helpful to, instead of making a vague blanket statement as above, show the offending comment to serve as an example of what not to do. What constitutes homophobia to jalopnik? Since the line is so different depending on the social group, it would be nice to know exactly where it lies.

Wow, although I would have been inclined to ban based simply on the use of "y u" rather than "Why are you". Thank you far sharing something I would have never found myself as I am a conscientious objector to twitter.

We are certainly better off without this gentlemen among us, but Michael's comment example does flirt with the modern generalized pejorative definition of the term "gay". I would be willing to bet (roughly translated) the poster meant "Why are you being so lame about this?", rather than "Why are you being such a homosexual about this?"

GDG was one of the first books I bought for my kids when they were little. It's one of the few books I remember from my own childhood and still enjoy reading (I'm 48, and not ashamed at all). PD Eastman was a genius.
